Women Council and Committee Elections kick-off next week
The Electoral Commission (EC) recently issued guidelines and the roadmap for the forth-coming Women Council and Committee elections which are to start next week at the village level. All women above 18 years are called upon to participate in the exercise.
Speaking to the press at Media Centre in Kampala, the Minister of State for Gender and Cultural Affairs, Peace Regis Mutuuza, said that this exercise will start on 26th October 2017 with the registration of all women at the village level and it will run up to 30th October 2017.
This election process will start from the village level, Sub-county, Division, District and then national elections. “Participation in this exercise is free and the committee will be comprised of five members; and no qualification is required from someone to contest in the up-coming elections,” Mutuuza said.
At the village level, the elections will be carried out through lining at the back of the contestant; and at the district and national level it will be a secret ballot. Mutuuza revealed that the Ministry received two billion shillings to carry out the exercise out of the four billion they had asked for. As a result, the Ministry had to go in for the cheapest way of carrying out the election.
She said that lining up during elections will make this exercise cost-friendly, mobilization will be easy and there will be limited cases of ridging of votes.
The National Women Council (NWC) is guaranteed by the Act of Law. It has been in existence for over 20 years and has played a significant role in mobilizing women across the country to participate in social, economical and political activities in the country; and also grooming women leaders through trainings, community dialogues and interactions among women.
