NRM war claimants drag Government to court

The Equal Opportunity Commission (EOC) tribunal sitting in Nebbi, has started hearing a case in which the claimants want to be compensated for the property losses they incurred during National Resistance Army (NRA) war between 1986 to 1989.

Filed by Samuel Ongiera and 92 in 2016, under case file EOC/NR/ 034/2016, the claimants allege that Government has directly and indirectly discriminated against them through the deliberate failure to settle their claims.

According to the claimant’s C\counsel, Elisabeth Akulu Ogwal, the complainants want compensation for their losses. Such compensation has already been given to their counterparts from Acholi, Lango and Teso sub-regions.

Ogwal said her clients had lost many lost properties like: vehicles, herds of cattle, household properties, crop destruction and others. A claimant, Odongo Owachi, of Kucwiny sub-county, alleges to have lost a car, Registration Number, UXG 194, a pick-up, No: UXA 840, a lorry, over 85 herds of cattle, building materials and household property which was looted by the NRA soldiers.

The case is being heard before EOC Commissioner, Joel Cox Ojuku. It will come up for mention in October 4, 2017 in Kampala.
