Chaos spreads over suspected cases of rigging in Kampala, Wakiso

Police has fired tear gas and live bullets in Makindye to stop an angry mob from lynching a man who was allegedly caught with pre-ticked ballot papers.

Our reporter Musisi Lwanga who reached the scene located along the road towards Makindye military barracks said that the angry residents captured the man with pre-ticked ballots and that when he tried to stop him, he pulled out a gun and fired bullets as he jumped into a house for safety.

Angry residents pelleted his vehicle and the house where he ran with stones before police intervened. The police rescued the man and took him away.

At Kajjansi health centre, located eight kilometres from Kampala along Entebbe road, chaos broke out after residents realized that two filled ballot boxes were in being sneaked into the polling station. Residents almost lynched the men who were trying to sneak in the boxes had it not been for the police to fire live bullets that calmed the situation.

At St. Dennis polling station in Makindye division, Kampala which is located near the junction that joins the road from Munyonyo to Ggaba, polling was suspended because voters rioted when they saw a police officer trying to sneak a ballot box with pre-ticked ballots.

According to our reporter Gabriel Buule, in the process of voters trying to stop the police officer from bringing a filled ballot box, fighting ensued that attracted police to start firing bullets.

Buule reports that the Director of Training in Police Andrew Felix Kaweesi stopped voting at St. Dennis and promised that polls would resume on Feb 19, 2016.

Whereas polling kicked off without a hitch in most upcountry locations, in Lwemiyaga, Ssembabule district, voting was allegedly suspended when the ballots for the MP were not included in the boxes. Only the ballot papers for President and Woman MP had been packed for some polling stations which sparked anger among voters.

The chaos that has so far been reported in Kampala and Wakiso follows lengthy delays by the Electoral Commission to deliver voting logistics to most polling stations in Kampala Wakiso.

At some polling stations especially in Kampala and Wakiso, it took up to mid-day for voters to start voting owing to delayed delivery of polling materials.
