President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, the presidential candidate for the National Resistance Movement (NRM), officially launches his 2026 re-election campaign today in Luwero District, a location deeply symbolic for the NRM. The district was the center of the 1981–1986 National Resistance Army (NRA) liberation struggle that brought Museveni to power, and it has traditionally served as the starting point for his campaigns due to its historical importance.
The opening rally is taking place at the Bukalasa Agricultural College playgrounds in Wobulenzi Town Council, where crowds of NRM supporters have already begun to gather in anticipation of Museveni’s arrival around midday. According to Kabuye Kyofatogabye, the State Minister for Kampala and NRM flagbearer for Nakaseke Central, all arrangements have been finalized to welcome the President.
Supporters from the greater Luwero area including Nakaseke and Nakasongola have reportedly been mobilized for the event, reflecting the region’s shared legacy in the NRA war. Despite this history, Wobulenzi remains a known opposition stronghold.
In preparation for the President’s visit, senior NRM leaders conducted late-night mobilization campaigns in Wobulenzi. Among them were Buganda Vice Chairman Haruna Kasolo Kyeyune, State Minister for the Luwero Triangle Alice Kaboyo, and Michael Nuwagira, the President’s younger brother.
Kasolo criticized the local opposition leadership, claiming it had failed to deliver tangible results over the past decade, and called on residents to back the NRM and President Museveni, pledging better public services if re-elected.
Roads leading to the rally venue have been adorned with Museveni’s campaign posters, and traditional performers and drummers have lined the streets, singing praises for the President as supporters continue to pour in. Security has been significantly increased across Wobulenzi and neighboring areas, with personnel deployed along the Kampala–Gulu highway to ensure safety during the rally.
