As I settle into life in Fort Portal, one of Uganda's newest cities, I can’t help but reflect on the stark contrasts between this vibrant town and the bustling streets of Kampala. While Kampala is a city characterized by its fast pace and overwhelming hustle, Fort Portal offers a fresh environment filled with potential and promise for small businesses.
In recent years, we’ve witnessed a shift in the entrepreneurial landscape. Small businesses 
are the backbone of our economy, driving innovation, creating jobs, and fostering 
community. However, the journey from a fledgling idea to a thriving enterprise is often 
riddled with challenges, especially for those starting from the bottom.
 

The Power of Belief

One of the foremost lessons I’ve learned in my entrepreneurial journey is the importance of 
self-belief. For many aspiring business owners, particularly in smaller towns like Fort Portal, 
the first step is often the hardest. It’s easy to feel discouraged by the perceived limitations 
of a smaller market. However, I believe that the key to success lies in nurturing a mindset 
that embraces opportunity rather than fear.
Fort Portal is brimming with resources; from its stunning landscapes that attract tourists 
to its rich agricultural potential. Every small business has the opportunity to harness these 
unique local traits. Whether it’s a café that showcases local produce or a crafts shop that 
highlights the region’s artisans, the possibilities are endless.


Building a Supportive Community


Another essential aspect of sustaining small businesses is community support. As we 
cultivate our local economy, it’s crucial that we uplift one another. Collaboration among 
entrepreneurs can lead to shared resources, networking opportunities, and collective 
growth. This is where mentorship plays a vital role. Experienced business owners can guide 
newcomers, sharing insights and strategies that can help navigate the challenges ahead.


Learning from Challenges


Every business faces hurdles, but these challenges can be invaluable learning experiences.
