Hafidh Ameir Hassan, the husband of Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan, has died while receiving treatment in Zanzibar, Tanzania's Vice-President Deogratius Ndejembi has announced.

Vice-President Deogratius Ndejembi announced the death, saying Ameir had been receiving medical treatment for a heart condition. Reports from Tanzanian and regional media place his death at about 8:00 a.m. local time at a hospital in Zanzibar.

Ameir's death has prompted condolences from leaders across East Africa and beyond, with messages directed to President Samia, her family and the Tanzanian people.

Kenyan President William Ruto expressed his condolences to President Samia following the death of her husband and described the loss as that of a lifelong companion, father and prominent Tanzanian.

Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed also sent condolences to President Samia and the people of Tanzania following the death of the First Gentleman.

African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf has also expressed his condolences to the Tanzanian president and her family.

Hafidh Ameir Hassan largely stayed away from the political spotlight despite being married to one of Africa's most prominent political figures.

He was known for his background in agriculture and academia. His public profile increased after Samia Suluhu Hassan became Tanzania's president in March 2021, following the death of President John Magufuli.

His appointment by circumstance as First Gentleman was historic because he became the first man to occupy the role in Tanzania.

Unlike many political spouses, Ameir made relatively few public appearances alongside President Samia. He was occasionally seen accompanying her at official functions but generally maintained a private life.

President Samia and Hafidh Ameir married in 1978, before Samia entered national politics.

The couple had four children, three sons and a daughter. Their daughter, Wanu Hafidh Ameir, has been involved in Tanzanian politics and public service. A biography published by Tanzania's embassy previously identified Wanu as a legislator.

Following the announcement of Ameir's death, funeral preparations began in Kizimkazi, in Zanzibar, which is associated with the family's roots.

Authorities and regional leaders are expected to continue issuing statements as Tanzania prepares to bid farewell to the former First Gentleman.

The death has generated a wave of condolences from African leaders.

Kenya, Ethiopia and the African Union are among those whose leaders have publicly expressed sympathy to President Samia and her family. Other regional leaders have also joined the tributes.

The widespread reaction reflects Ameir's position as the husband of Tanzania's sitting president and his historic status as the country's first First Gentleman.
