What you didn’t know about marriage

a cake and invited guests. That’s what makes all weddings similar. Every marriage, is different. What one calls a happy marriage and therefore a bed of roses is what another person calls hell. What really constitutes a happy marriage seems to be a golden question.

Marriage is like a groundnut; you never know what exactly is inside until you crack open the husk. Even when the nut is cracked it is still upon you to turn the poor ground nuts into good ones. The fact remains that you will never find happiness in marriage; we only take happiness into our marriages. Simply don’t labour under such a big illusion that happiness is found in marriage; it is only taken there.

A young couple that had dated for a while wanted to turn their relationship into marriage. But the lady had a few questions to ask the man before she commits herself: “Will you give up drinking, smoking, cheating, disrespecting me and being short tempered when we get married?”asked the lady.

“Yes, I will give up all that” replied the young man.

“What else will you give up apart from all those”, asked the young lady.

“I will give up the idea of getting married”, replied the man.

A happy marriage is everyone’s dream and people always work towards achieving exactly that. At Italian weddings, it is not unusual for both the bride and the groom to break a glass. Actually the number of shards will be equal to the number of happy years the couple will have. And a person’s level of education influences the age at which they marry. Couples tend to marry later in countries with higher numbers of educated adults, while the opposite is true for countries with lower education levels.

Did you know that short men tend to stay married, and compensate for their shortness by earning a higher relative share of income? And the bigger the wedding, the higher the chances of sustaining the marriage.

This is because the decision to have a big public ceremony symbolizes a commitment which may influence the mind set of couples.   In the west it is a practice for couples to kiss after taking their vows. The fact that a marriage ceremony typically ends with a kiss dates back from the ancient Rome where the kiss was a legal bond that sealed contracts and marriage was seen as a contract.

Sometimes we wonder why wedding rings are supposed to be put on a particular finger. Weddings rings are worn on the third finger of the left hand because the Romans believed that a nerve led directly from there to the heart. A woman was asked why she wore her wedding ring on the wrong finger. She did not hesitate to reply that it’s because she married a wrong man.

This warning goes to those who don’t want to marry: In ancient Sparta, men who were unmarried by the time they were 30 years forfeited the right to vote. Here URA will tax the incomes of bachelors as a way of encouraging them to think otherwise.
