Uganda has successfully evacuated 43 of its citizens from Iran amid safety concerns. The operation was coordinated by the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) through its Defence Advisor in Turkey, Major General Bob Ogiki. The students, who were stranded in Tehran, have now safely arrived in Turkey and are awaiting arrangements to return home to Uganda.
The Uganda Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a security notice on February 28, 2026, emphasizing the importance of citizen safety. In the notice, Permanent Secretary Bagiire Vincent Waiswa advised all Ugandans in Iran who are able to take serious precautions and leave the country through any available means. Those who remain in Iran are instructed to stay indoors, alert community leaders of their whereabouts, and monitor media updates, as information about evacuations will be limited until the situation stabilizes.
The Ministry has also withdrawn non-essential staff from the Ugandan Embassy in Tehran, and consular services are currently limited while alternative arrangements are put in place. Citizens are strongly advised to suspend travel to the Middle East until further notice.
Officials confirmed that efforts are ongoing to identify and assist other Ugandan nationals who may still be in Iran. The government continues to monitor the situation closely to ensure the safety and welfare of its citizens.
The evacuation demonstrates Uganda’s proactive approach to protecting its nationals abroad. Authorities have urged all citizens to take the security notice seriously and follow the recommended precautions to stay safe while in Iran.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs highlighted that these measures are temporary but necessary. Families of the evacuated students have been reassured, and officials continue to coordinate the safe return of all Ugandans currently abroad.
Uganda’s swift action underscores its commitment to citizen safety and the importance of clear communication during international emergencies. Citizens are encouraged to remain informed and follow official guidance until further updates are provided.
