Airtel Uganda Hands Over UGX 42.9 Billion to UCC Fund to Boost Digital Inclusion
Airtel Uganda has handed over UGX 42.9 billion to the Uganda Communications Universal Service and Access Fund (UCUSAF), reaffirming its commitment to expanding digital connectivity and communication access across Uganda.
The contribution represents 2% of Airtel Uganda’s gross annual revenue for the financial year ending December 31, 2025, in compliance with the Communications Act and the terms of the company’s national telecommunications license.
According to the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC), the funds will support ongoing efforts to strengthen internet access and communication services in underserved and unserved communities across the country.
Speaking during the official handover ceremony at UCC headquarters, UCC Executive Director Nyombi Thembo commended Airtel Uganda for its consistency and commitment through its annual contribution to the fund.
He noted that the contribution goes beyond regulatory compliance and reflects a shared commitment to expanding communication services and advancing digital inclusion in Uganda.
Nyombi Thembo also highlighted that this year’s contribution increased from UGX 37.9 billion contributed last year, describing it as a strong indicator of growth within Uganda’s telecommunications sector and continued investment in the country’s digital transformation agenda.
According to UCC, the fund supports strategic national priorities including expansion of ICT infrastructure, innovation, development of digital skills, and connectivity for marginalized communities.
In a statement, Airtel Uganda said the contribution reinforces the company’s commitment to bridging the digital divide through improved communication services nationwide.
Airtel Uganda CEO and Managing Director Soumendra Sahu said the company shares a common vision with UCC to drive inclusive growth through expanded digital connectivity.
Nyombi Thembo further explained that part of the levy supports the National Consolidated Fund, while the remainder is channeled through UCUSAF to support ICT access initiatives in rural and underserved areas.
He added that the fund contributes to ICT integration in sectors such as education and agriculture, supports digital skills training, promotes digital inclusion for persons with disabilities, and facilitates distribution of smart devices to marginalized communities.
The latest contribution comes amid continued growth in Uganda’s telecom industry and increasing demand for digital services, mobile connectivity, and internet access across the country.
