Church of Uganda approves second diocese for Busoga

The House of Bishops of the Anglican Church in Uganda has approved the creation of a new diocese for Busoga region, the Archbishop of the Church of Uganda Rt. Rev. Dr. Stanley Ntagali held a meeting at Christ’s Cathedral Bugembe on Saturday January 17, 2015 to constitute a substantive Diocesan Electoral College.

According to Busoga Diocesan Chancellor Prof. David Justin Bakibinga, the college shall convene in July to nominate two Bishops such that the House of Bishops can elect on them during their meeting in August.

The current Bishop of Busoga Diocese Rt Rev Dr Michael Kyomya, who is set to retire at the end of 2015, also disclosed that the college will also choose his successor.

According to the new guidelines that will govern the election of newbishops across the province of the Church of Uganda, the Electoral College must be constituted by 15 members. These include; the Diocesan chancellor who chairs it. Others are; Five clergy who include two active canons and three active non-canons, three youths, three women (not wives of the clergy) and three men.
