Education minister directs on feeding school children
The Minister for Education and Sports, First Lady Janet Kataaha Museveni, had no kind words for parents in the Busoga Sub-region who do not want to feed their children at school.
During the celebrations to mark the Day of the African Child last week in Bulamagi Sub-county in Iganga District, Mrs. Museveni wondered whether these parents do not feed their children at home. “If there was no education, does it mean that these children don’t eat anything during the day at holidays?” she asked.
She instructed families and parents that they “must hold the first cardinal responsibility in growing, nurturing and educating” their children, challenging them to stop being lazy, by asking the Government to do everything, including feeding their children at school. Accordingly, she directed that feeding children at school is a must by parents, saying, “Strong families make a strong nation.”
The Iganga District Chairman, Patrick Kayemba Gavamukulya, speaking on behalf of the children said that said that his leadership was mobilizing and sensitizing parents to feed their children at school. He said that the children were urging the Government to fight continued vices of; child sacrifice, trafficking, early marriages and child labour.
He commended the Government and its development partners for the universal education and immunization saying children have through the programmes accessed moderate literacy and health care, but decried the high rate of school drop-out in the district.“My councilors are labouring to sensitize the electorate in their respective areas and we hope returns will benefit and help in improving the standards of education in our district,” Kayemba said.
The celebrations were organized by the Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development (MGLSD) in partnership UNICEF under the theme: “Social Protection and Empowerment of Children around the Country”.
It was attended by the Minister for Gender, Labour and Social Development, Janat Mukwaya, UN Resident Coordinator in Uganda, Rosa Malongo, the US Ambassador to Uganda, Deborah R Malac, Minister of State for Children and Youth, Florence Nakiwala Kiyingi, MGLSD Permanent Secretary, Pius Bigirimana and Members of Parliament from Iganga.
