WFP buys UG food worth over UGX200bn in 2018
He World Food Programme (WFP) in 2018 bought in Uganda 198,000 metric tons of food worth USD 55m (approx UGX 204.4bn). This was revealed this week during a meeting in Kampala to review and evaluate WFP’s work in 2018 following a strategic plan launched last year.
This purchase brings the total amount of food bought in Uganda by the WFP in the last three years to 425,000 metric tons valued at USD 147m (over 546bn).
The meeting, attended by Cabinet Ministers, Chief Administrative Officers from the districts where WFP works, representatives of government ministries and agencies as well as WFP staff also heard that because of WFP’s support in Karamoja, the region is now able to produce high quality grain.
While addressing the meeting, the Minister of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries, Vincent Bamulangaki Ssempijja said Uganda and the WFP were great allies and partners, more specifically in the agricultural sector.
Ssempija said: “The WFP strategic plan rhymes with the agricultural sector strategic plan. We move together with WFP. We know what they do, and they know what the Ministry does, all the time.”
