Mutebile confirms probe of BOU staff
The Governor of Bank of Uganda Tumusiime Mutebile has today confirmed that a probe is under way linked to the unauthorised transaction of goods by its officials.
The head of the Anti-Corruption Unit of state house Lt. Col. Edith Nakalema also confirmed the probe.
Media reports had earlier suggested that the unauthorised goods could be money that was loaded onto the chartered plane from Paris, France, but government spokesman Ofwono Opondo has since refused to confirm these claims.
A statement signed by Mutebile himself states that: “On April 27 the Bank of Uganda received a consignment. During the verification process the BOU staff reported an anomaly in the inventory of the expected consignment.
“Therefore I requested the Anti-Corruption Unit of state house to investigate this matter. ACU has started the investigation and BOU is fully cooperating with the process .”
Opondo confirmed that ACU is still interrogating a number of top officials relating to the loading and clearance at Entebbe international airport of five ‘extra pallets’ in excess of the twenty that were loaded onto the chartered plane that ferried newly printed UGX currency notes from Paris to Entebe.
In the eye of the storm is the deputy director of operations at BOU a one Dr. Barenzi and other top officials in the central bank.
