EAC Presidents sign mutual defence pact

The three leaders reportedly also condemned the rebels led by former vice president Dr. Riek Machar’s attempt to remove the government of President Salva Kiir by military means.

In the communique, the leaders further condemned the recent attack by Riek’s rebels in South Sudan on the town of Malakal on February 18, 2014, as this constituted a serious violation of the cessation of hostilities agreement signed on January 23, 2014 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
