Princess Diana Balizzamuggale Teyeggala, Sister of Kabaka Mutebi II Passes Away, Buganda Kingdom in Mourning
The Buganda Kingdom is in mourning following the death of Princess Diana Balizzamuggale Teyeggala, a younger sister to Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II.
The sad news was officially announced by the Katikkiro of Buganda, Charles Peter Mayiga, on behalf of the Kabaka, the royal household and the entire Kingdom. Princess Diana passed away after a period of illness.
“Her Royal Highness Princess Diana Balizzamuggale Teyeggala has been called by God,” Mayiga said in a statement confirming her passing.
Princess Diana Balizzamuggale Teyeggala was a daughter of the late Kabaka Edward Frederick William David Walugembe Mutebi Luwangula Muteesa II, one of Buganda’s most prominent historical monarchs. She was born in October 1966, during the period when her father was living in exile, and therefore never met him before his death. She was a member of Buganda’s immediate royal family and one of the younger siblings of the reigning Kabaka, Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II.
According to the Kingdom leadership, Princess Diana passed away at a medical facility in Kisubi, in central Uganda. While details of her illness were not publicly disclosed, the Katikkiro noted that she had been receiving medical care over a period of time, both within Uganda and abroad.
In his address, Charles Peter Mayiga conveyed heartfelt condolences to the Kabaka and the royal family, describing the loss as deeply painful to both the monarchy and the people of Buganda.
“We deeply sympathise with Your Majesty, Kabaka. This is a great loss and we have failed to protect you from this pain,” he added.
The Buganda Kingdom has called upon subjects and well-wishers to remain calm, respectful and prayerful during this period of mourning, as the royal family comes to terms with the loss.
At the time of announcing her death, the Kingdom stated that funeral and burial arrangements had not yet been finalised and would be communicated in due course through official channels.
Princess Diana’s passing has been received with widespread sorrow across Buganda, with many subjects and leaders expressing condolences to the royal family. Buganda remains Uganda’s largest traditional kingdom and is recognised under the Constitution as a cultural institution with significant social and moral influence.
