Uganda's Vice President Jessica Alupo has held talks with the World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Director for Africa, Prof. Mohamed Janabi, and Africa CDC Director-General Dr. Jean Kaseya on strengthening health security, cross-border collaboration and resilient health systems as the region remains on alert for Ebola.

According to WHO Uganda, the leaders reaffirmed the importance of regional solidarity, coordinated action to contain Ebola at its source and sustained investments to build stronger, more self-reliant health systems across Africa.

Prof. Janabi said it was an honour to meet the Vice President alongside Dr. Kaseya, adding that they commended Uganda's leadership in containing the Ebola outbreak through a rapid and comprehensive response.

He noted that with the Ebola outbreak continuing in the neighbouring Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), the discussions underscored the need for sustained regional solidarity, timely information sharing and coordinated cross-border action to reduce the risk of further spread.

Dr. Kaseya said Uganda had demonstrated what decisive leadership, strong preparedness and community trust can achieve. He said discussions with the Vice President focused on lessons from Uganda's successful containment of the Bundibugyo Ebola outbreak, adding that the country's experience offers valuable lessons for the continent, including the importance of acting early, coordinating closely and working with communities at every stage of a public health response.

The WHO Africa Regional Director and the Africa CDC Director-General also met Uganda's Minister of Health, Dr. Chris Baryomunsi, and other health officials, where they commended the country's efforts in responding to and containing Ebola and reaffirmed support for regional cooperation, and sustained preparedness amid ongoing risks in the region.

Africa CDC said Uganda's response demonstrated the importance of strong leadership, science and close coordination, while emphasizing the need for continued vigilance against the risk of imported cases.

The engagements reaffirmed the commitment of Uganda, WHO Africa and Africa CDC to strengthening regional cooperation, enhancing health security and building resilient health systems capable of responding to future public health emergencies.
