Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) confirmed that today’s swearing-in ceremony for the newly elected Lord Mayor and Lord Councilors will proceed under strict Ebola Virus Disease Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), with attendance limited to invited guests only.
The ceremony is taking place today, Wednesday 20 May 2026, at City Hall Headquarters in Kampala.
In its official communication, KCCA said the event remains an important milestone in the city’s democratic governance and leadership transition, but emphasized the need for strict public health compliance.
According to a press statement issued by Deputy Executive Director yesterday:
“We have undertaken a careful assessment of tomorrow’s event and resolved that the ceremony shall proceed under strict observance of all Ebola Virus Disease Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), attendance at this ceremony will be strictly limited to invited guests only.”
The decision follows guidance from the Ministry of Health and national public health authorities after confirmation of Ebola Virus Disease cases in Kampala and the declaration of an outbreak of the Bundibugyo strain on 15 May 2026.
KCCA noted that the measures are in line with directives from government leadership to prioritize public safety during official engagements.
The authority outlined several preventive measures to be enforced at the venue, including crowd control, mandatory handwashing and sanitization, temperature screening, registration of attendee contact details, social distancing, and avoidance of physical contact such as handshakes.
Members of the public have been advised not to visit City Hall unless they are officially invited.
“To ensure that all Ugandans are able to follow this important occasion safely, the entire ceremony will be broadcast live through KCCA's official digital platforms, including the KCCA X handle and other official social media channels,” the statement added.
KCCA confirmed it is working closely with the Kampala City Ebola Response Team and the Ministry of Health to ensure full compliance with all health directives while maintaining continuity of governance and institutional functions in the city.
