The Commander of the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) Reserve Force, Maj Gen Joseph Ssemwanga, has commended military veterans in the Teso, Elgon and Busoga sub-regions for their contribution to Uganda’s defence and security, particularly for encouraging their children to join the armed forces.

Ssemwanga made the remarks during his commanders’ tour of the three sub-regions, where he engaged with veterans and regional commanders on matters relating to veterans’ welfare, the role of the Reserve Force and the relationship between the military and local communities.

During the engagements, the Reserve Force Commander praised the veterans for their sacrifices during their years of military service and for continuing to contribute to national security by supporting their children who choose to serve in the UPDF.

He urged the veterans to take pride in their children’s decision to join the army and encouraged families and communities to welcome and support soldiers whenever they return home after completing their military duties.

Maj Gen Ssemwanga emphasised that military service should not separate soldiers from their families or communities. Instead, he called on community members to recognise serving men and women as part of their communities and provide them with acceptance, encouragement and support.

He also highlighted the importance of veterans in strengthening national security, noting that their military experience, knowledge and influence within communities place them in a position to guide younger generations and promote peaceful coexistence.

The commander encouraged former service personnel to use their experience to mentor young people, instil discipline and patriotism, and participate in activities that contribute to community development.

He further observed that strong relations between the military and the population depend on families and communities understanding the responsibilities of soldiers and providing a supportive environment when they return to civilian life or visit their home communities.

The tour also provided an opportunity for discussions with veterans and regional commanders on their welfare and the contribution of the UPDF Reserve Force to national defence. The engagements highlighted the importance of maintaining cooperation between military personnel, former service members, local leaders and the wider population.

Maj Gen Ssemwanga’s message underscored the continuing role of veterans in promoting national unity, peace and security beyond their years of active military service. He called for sustained cooperation among veterans, serving soldiers and community leaders to ensure that military personnel are welcomed and supported within their communities.

The UPDF Reserve Force contributes to Uganda’s national defence while maintaining engagement with veterans and communities across the country. Such engagements provide an opportunity to recognise former service personnel and encourage their continued participation in initiatives that support peace, security and development.

Maj Gen Ssemwanga was accompanied during the tour by the Chief of Staff of the Reserve Force, Brig Gen Ssekiranda Mwanje, and other directors from the Reserve Force.
