Brig. Nalweyiso promoted, as Ankunda, Kulayigye are knifed
President Yoweri Museveni has made a fresh shake up of his army command, and dropping long-serving spokesperson and UPDF political commissar Lt. Col Paddy Ankunda and Col. Felix Kulayigye.
The promotion of Brig. Nalweyiso, the a senior presidential advisor on defence and security affairs, to the rank of Maj. Gen. not only makes her Uganda’s most decorated female soldier in history but also the highest ranked female soldier in East Africa.
Maj. Gen. Nakibus Lakara, who was sent back to Bombo, has been appointed the Commander Uganda Rapid Deployment Capability Centre.
The latest shake-up comes days after Museveni sacked Gen Katumba Wamala from the top leadership of the UPDF replacing him with 52 year-old Gen. David Muhoozi. The reshuffle saw the rise of mostly young soldiers put in the most important positions of the army.
A statement released by the UPDF also indicates that the Commander in Chief of Armed forces replaced army Spokesperson Lt. Col. Paddy Ankunda with Brig. Richard Karemire, the former deputy to the Chief of Military Intelligence (CMI).
In another major shake-up, Museveni has dismissed long-time socialite Col. Felix Kulayigye from the position of UPDF chief political commissar, replacing him with State House officer Col. Henry Mastiko. Col. Kulayigye’s woes may be linked with recent reports that he engaged himself in a fight with gold dealers that duped his sister.
The development comes days after the January 10th redeployment of top UPDF officials where former Chief of Defense Forces, Gen Katumba Wamala was replaced by Gen David Muhoozi and appointed State Minister for Works.
Among other reshuffles, Mike Kabango has been promoted to Brigadier and sent to 5th division.

Brig. Paul Lokech, described in the UPDF statement as a Somlia hero, has been sent to Mbarara as second division commander, replacing Brig. Peter Elweru who was appointed Commander for Land Forces.
Brig. Lokech was one of the first commanders of the UPDF Amisom in Somalia where his daring acts during his tenure and the fight against Al-Shabaab earned him the name ‘Lion on Somalia’
