Museveni orders Chinese rice farmers out of wetlands
President Museveni has directed Chinese rice farmers to vacate wetlands immediately. The president’s directive came after witnessing widespread destruction of wetlands by farmers during a visit to Luweero recently.
Museveni said the Chinese rice farmers should try upland rice farming and leave wetlands alone.
The president’s directive comes three months after he threatened to cancel all land titles that were issued in Lwera wetlands and white were converted into expansive rice farms by Chinese investors.
The directive also comes after intensive pressure from various corners of Uganda’s public objecting to what many consider as irresponsible aspects of investment by the Chinese and a number of other investors.
Recently, Museveni participated at a forum on Responsible investments where he expressed support for those seeking to ensure that investors don’t damage the public good.
