Mbabazi warns on rigging
The Go forward presidential candidate John Patrick Amama Mbabazi has sounded a warning to those intending to engage in vote rigging reassuring supporters about the safety of their votes in the coming elections.
While delivering his inaugural campaign speech soon after his nomination at Nakivubo stadium on Tuesday this week, the former premier took advantage of the current public perception that he has what it takes to stand up to government’s security agents since he was one of its architects .
“I must tell you that I was at the very center of building the security system which is in existence in this country currently, ” Mbabazi stated
“I therefore warn anybody who intends to use undemocratic means to frustrate the choice of the people of Uganda in this election to desist from doing so because we are very well organized and prepared for them, ” He added.
Amplifying Mbabazi’s words, Busiro County Member of parliament Lubega Ssegona who is backing the Go Forward candidate in this election told The Sunrise that he is privy to strategies his camp has put in place to counter malpractices in all forms during elections.
“We are going to make life very difficult for whoever is intending to involve himself in all forms of malpractices” Ssegona said
But Electoral Commission Chairman Dr Badru Kiggundu has expressed optimism that the electoral process will go on peacefully.
Kiggundu however called upon Ugandans particularly presidential candidates and their respective supporters for vigilance in guarding against electoral malpractices to avoid post election skirmishes that have dogged elections in Africa in the recent past.
Presidential press adviser Tamale Mirundi has dismissed Mbabazi words as “cheap blackmail.”
“Just like Besigye, Mbabazi, is just trying to warm up the public preparing himself for defeat on his way to the political limbo” Tamale said.
