A police detective from Jinja Central Police station collapsed and died instantly when he went to arrest a suspect in Mafubira. The detective, a former employee of SWISSGUARD, a private security organization on suspicion of conniving with a security guard to steal property worth Ushs25m last year in Jinja.

At first, onlookers thought the corporal, was struck by charms administered by the suspect because the office collapsed soon after pulling out his Identity Card to show to the suspect.

The regional police spokeperson for Kiira region, Samason Lubega confirmed the sudden death of Munyoli.

Lubega said the officer was picked by a team of officers from Kampala to assist in arresting Oleke a resident of Mafubira.

Oleke and his comrade in crime had been at large for months since they allegedly committed the offense.

Police started the operation after one of the two private security officers abandoned his gun.

“The officer collapsed and died instantly during the process of identifying himself to the suspect, before then he was served soda while waiting to arrest the suspect but I cannot say or confirm that it was poison until a postmortem is done,” said Lubega.

However police officers who spoke to our reporter on condition of anonymity suspect that the police officer was poisoned in soda drink that he took while waiting to arrest the suspect.

“Mafubira community is not easy and there are hardcore criminals who are cooperative. When you are assigned to carry out any operation there you have to be very careful,” said one the officer.

Lubega said the suspect was arrested and is in police custody in Jinja.

The postmortem report revealed that the officer had internal bleeding in the brain during the process of falling and his lungs were found rotten.

Munyoli will be laid to rest in Kibuku district on Tuesday as police continues investigating his death.
