Maama Afumbye Ekitobelo: Talking Music with Legendary Sammy Kasule
Legendary Sammy Kasule is back in town with his pleasurable musical vibes that rocked the early 90s but this time with a live band featuring legends like Frank Mbalire, Izaac Zimbe , Matia Muwonge and Tracy Birungi.
The Maama Afumbye Ekitobeero singer who had travelled to Europe to further his Musical career told The Sunrise that it is time for him to come home and give more to his fans and to contribute to the music industry as well.
Sammy Kasule together with his comrades have established a musical studio in Kampala called Ziwuuna where he has currently outed a new song Omukwano gwo omupya and Twegazaanye a single by Frank Mbalire.
Kasule says that greed mentality and personal pride has partly contributed to the death of Live Band Music given the fact that solo musicians tend to opt for Compact disk performance other than live music.
Sammy Kasule’s Ziwuna band perfoms Every Friday of the week at a to city hangout The Dining Room behind Ministry of health in Kampala.
Who is Sammy Kasule
Born in Uganda, Samuel Kasule showed a canny interest in music at a very early age when he built his very first guitar out of wood and tins. However, his mother would hear none of it and smashed his first two home-made guitars.
Sammy made a third one which he hid in the bushes, and secretly played it whenever he was sent on an errands. In secondary school, he joined Katikamu Light College band beginning his lifelong career as a musician.
Dropping out of school
Sammy Kasule later dropped out of school and first joined Super Kaumba and Les Noirs in the 1970’s. Owing to the political climate in Uganda then, Sammy fled the country during Idi Amin’s reign of terror for Kenya where he established himself. During this period he played bass guitar for Vundumuna in addition to recording 2 albums. The self titled Kasule and Muziki.
While in Sweden since 1991, Sammy Kasule started a band named Makonde which he leads. The band is a rare mix of cultures consisting of musicians from several African countries and also some from Sweden. He continues to compose, sing and also plays the bass guitar.
