Police in Kampala are investigating a deadly stabbing and arson incident in Bunga that left two children dead and three others injured early Thursday morning.
The incident happened at about 4:00 a.m. on August 20, 2026, in Kalungu Bunga, Ggaba Parish, Makindye Division, Kampala District, according to Kampala Metropolitan Police.
Police said the incident came to light after a housemaid was awakened by an alarm and cries for help from children inside the main house.
When she went to investigate, she reportedly found several children suffering from serious stab wounds and raised the alarm.
One of the victims, identified as 14-year-old Khadija Daizy, was found dead in her bedroom.
Another child, seven-year-old Hawa Dalena, was taken to Nsambya Hospital but later died while receiving treatment.
Three other children, aged 13, eight and five, survived the attack and were taken to hospital for medical care.
Police have identified 43-year-old Namayo Dorothy, a Kenyan national and mother of the children, as the suspect in the case.
Namayo was also found injured following the incident and is currently receiving treatment at Mulago National Referral Hospital, where she remains under police guard.
Police have not yet established the circumstances that led to the attack or its motive, saying investigations are still underway.
The incident also involved the burning of a Toyota Hiace vehicle at the residence.
According to police, the vehicle was completely destroyed by fire before officers from the Fire Prevention and Rescue Services responded and put out the blaze.
Investigators recovered a jerrycan suspected to have contained petrol from the scene. The item, together with other exhibits collected at the residence, has been taken for forensic examination.
A team comprising homicide detectives, Scene of Crime Officers and fire and rescue personnel visited the residence and documented the scene as part of the investigation.
The bodies of Khadija and Hawa were transported to Mulago City Mortuary for postmortem examinations.
Police said statements have been obtained from the person who reported the incident and other relevant witnesses.
The case was registered at Kabalagala Police Division under allegations of murder, attempted murder and arson.
ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, Deputy Public Relations Officer for Kampala Metropolitan Police, said investigations remain ongoing as detectives work to establish what happened and determine the motive behind the attack.
The suspect remains under police guard at Mulago as inquiries continue.
