NRM approves SG and other office bearers ahead of court ruling
The NRM Central Executive Committee has Thursday approved Justine Kasule Lumumba as the new party secretary general.
She replaces Amama Mbabazi, deputy secretary general, Rosemary Namayanja, party treasure and Kenneth Omona as deputy treasurer.
In a meeting held at State House Entebbe, members also approved Tanga Odoi outing Makerere University don as the new party’s electoral commission chairperson.
However, the approvals come hours before court can pronounce itself on an application that had sought to stop the process.
On December 24 Benjamin Alipanga, a student of Kent University sued NRM seeking a temporarily injunction on the approval of newly nominated members.
Alipanga argues the new appointments are illegal and contravene the party constitution.
In his application, he says NRM has a secretary general, Amama Mbabazi, who is yet to serve out his constitutional term.
The Constitutional Court, presided over by acting deputy Chief Justice, Steven Kavuma is today expected to deliver a ruling pending disposal of the main application, which seeks to pronounce as illegal the Kyankwanzi resolution by the NRM Parliamentary Caucus, which ring-fenced Museveni as the party’s sole candidate in the 2016 presidential elections.
