Anger as loser is declared NRM flag bearer in Kaliro
Police in Kaliro fired teargas to disperse angry supporters of the NRM candidate who was cheated in the NRM primaries for Gadumire sub-county chairmanship.
The district police commander Samuel Asiimwe on Wednesday said he ordered his forces to use teargas to restore sanity after supporters of one Kimbugwe Yobu stormed the office of the NRM district registrar Franco Kasadha asking him to reverse his earlier declaration of George Kulata who got less votes than Kimbugwe.
Gadumire sub-county registrar Kasadha had declared George Kulata who garnered 2036 as the winner against Kimbugwe’s 2130 votes.
Kimbugwe’s supporters vowed not to leave the Registrar’s office until the Registrar overturned his declaration and announced that Kimbugwe, was the rightful LCIII flag bearer.
“There is no way your man announces a person with lesser votes and you
think we shall just sit back and look on as such un acceptable impunity is allowed to continue!” one voter shouted.
When Registrar Kasadha told the angry supporters that he lacked the mandate to overturn the earlier declaration unless by order of court, the supporters became more irate threatening to strangle him which prompted police to swing into action by firing teargas to disperse them.
Kimbugwe says he has already filled a formal complaint to the electoral commission and secretariat of NRM over the same.
