Christian Ronaldo in sensational return to Man Utd
Five-time Ballon D’Or winner Christian Ronaldo has made a sensational return to Old Trafford, twelve years after he left the English club.
The 36-year old Portuguese player was reportedly persuaded to return to United by his former manager at Old Trafford Sir Alex Ferguson who allegedly told him he would be feted as a hero, instead of tarnishing his reputation in the event he chose to sign for Man city, who had expressed greater interest in him.
The tweet announcing Ronaldo’s return has already received close to 2 million likes, a symbol of his popularity with United fans.
And despite his advanced age, there is a lot of expectations and potential for the Portuguese to recreate the magic he has recorded first in England with United, then in Spain in Real Madrid and in Italy with Juventus.
Ronaldo became the first person to top the score sheet in three different top leagues in Europe.
Last year, despite losing the Italian Serie A title to Inter Millan, Ronaldo was the top scorer with 29 goals.
The acquisition of Ronaldo, in addition to youngsters Jardon Sancho, and many other star players like Pogba , Bruno Fernandes, former Madrid teammate Rafael Varane, could however prove a source of pressure for manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
Reports indicate United would pay Juventus US$40 million depending on performance. Personal terms are yet to be disclosed.
Ronaldo’s arrival is likely to boost United’s commercial side given his popularity off the field.
He was the first soccer player in history to reach a billion dollars in earnings.
