High Court Grants Lawyer Eron Kiiza Bail Pending Appeal
The High Court’s Criminal Division has granted lawyer Eron Kiiza bail, allowing him temporary freedom as he pursues an appeal against his conviction. Justice Michael Elubu ruled in Kiiza’s favor, setting stringent bail conditions, including a UGX 20 million cash bond and sureties at UGX 50 million non-cash.
Kiiza is required to report to the court registrar on the first Monday of every month and surrender his passport to prevent flight risk.
A high-profile team of sureties stood for Kiiza, highlighting his credibility and strong community ties. These included: Anthony Asiimwe, Uganda Law Society (ULS) Vice President, Sylvia Tumwebaze, Kiiza’s wife, Dr. Busingye Kabumba, a law lecturer at Makerere University, Primah Kwagala, Executive Director of Women’s Probono Initiative, an Archives and Data Manager at Hima Cement
The legal fraternity, particularly ULS members and human rights defenders, has closely followed Kiiza’s case and expressed solidarity with him.

With bail granted, Kiiza will now focus on preparing his appeal, hoping to overturn the lower court’s decision. His legal team is expected to challenge both the conviction and the sentencing.
