Police in the Kiira Region have recovered the body of Gershom Rwakasanga, the operations manager at the Uganda National Oil Company (UNOC) in Jinja.

Rwakasanga drowned on Saturday evening at Busowoko Resort Beach in Butagaya Sub County, Jinja District. Abdullah Suuta, the resort’s General Manager, reported that Rwakasanga arrived at the beach around 5:30 p.m. with his daughter for an outing.

The pair hired three tour guides and took photos near the falls. Shortly after, Rwakasanga went to the water massage point, which is a deep and slippery area situated between sharp rocks.

According to Suuta, Rwakasanga likely slipped and fell into the water. He suspects that the deceased may have struck his head on the rocks, causing him to lose consciousness.

The body became trapped among the rocks, hindering early rescue efforts.

Suuta mentioned that the resort has 20 standby divers, with ten on duty at the time of the accident around 6:30 p.m.

They contacted the Police Marine Unit for assistance, but their search that night was unsuccessful.

Kiira Regional Police Spokesperson James Mubi said the marine team resumed the search on Sunday morning alongside local divers and recovered the body around 12:30 p.m., trapped between the rocks.

Mubi added that the body was taken to Jinja Regional Referral Hospital mortuary for a postmortem examination.
