Motorists using the Kampala–Entebbe Expressway (KEE) can now pay toll fees using mobile money, following the launch of a new payment service by the Ministry of Works and Transport (MoWT).

The new service provides motorists with an additional and more convenient way to pay toll fees at designated lanes at the Busega, Kajjansi and Mpala Toll Plazas.

Mobile Money payments are currently available in Toll Lanes 4 and 5, where motorists can complete their payments using their mobile money accounts at the toll gates.

The initiative was officially launched on 25 September 2026 at Kajjansi Toll Plaza by Eng. Dr. Timothy Tibesigwa, Acting Engineer-in-Chief at the Ministry of Works and Transport.

According to Tibesigwa, traffic on the Kampala–Entebbe Expressway has increased significantly in recent years, making efficient toll payment systems increasingly important.

He said the number of vehicles using the expressway had risen from approximately 21,000 vehicles per day in 2022 to about 29,000 vehicles per day in 2026.

The Ministry said the introduction of Mobile Money payments is part of its efforts to improve the efficiency and convenience of tolling services for road users.

The Ministry of Works and Transport is also preparing to introduce an Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) system across all toll lanes during the 2027/28 Financial Year.

The planned system will incorporate technologies such as automated number plate recognition, prepayment services and self-service payment options.

The ETC system is expected to further expand the available methods of paying toll fees on the Kampala–Entebbe Expressway.

MTN MoMo supported the launch of the Mobile Money toll payment service, with stakeholders highlighting the role of technology in improving services for motorists.

The launch was attended by Jemima Kariuki, representing the MTN CEO; Eng. Isaac Menya, KEE Contract Manager, representing the Commissioner for National Roads at MoWT; Brian Lukwiya, representing the Accountant General of the Ministry of Finance, Planning and Economic Development; Eng. Joan Alinda, KEE Project Manager at MoWT; Ivan Katamba, KEE Operator Representative; as well as representatives from MTN MoMo, MoWT, the KEE management team and other stakeholders.

Motorists have been encouraged to make use of the new Mobile Money payment option while continuing to observe speed limits, traffic signs, lane markings and other road safety requirements when using the expressway.
