Why Semwanga pulled more attention than Mukiibi
I now believe in the statistics that about 65% of Ugandans are youths. You don’t need to investigate in order to establish the authenticity of the figures when Uganda Bureau of Statistics says the youths are the biggest percentage of the Ugandan population. We actually have a very young population and signs are all over the sky to prove that.
It is in this country where five people stand for presidency during a presidential election while an overwhelming fifty and more participants register for Miss Uganda contests. You even expect a bigger turn up during a concert organized by a local musician than the turn up on Election Day. People spend more money on entertainment than on the education of their children.
Last week has been a sad week indeed. First of all, blood had started clotting leading to his death.
Indeed a when death comes looking for his bride you cannot hide. Professor Mukiibi was in July last year involved in a nasty road accident at Nakasozi along Masaka road. He seemed to have survived that accident but could not finally dodge death. His narrow escape from the claws of death last year did not mean victory. Death was warming up to launch yet another attack.
In the same week, flamboyant Ugandan businessman and socialite, based in South Africa, Ivan Semwanga died at the age of 40. SSemwanga passed away on Thursday morning at a hospital in Pretoria where he had been admitted following a stroke. His death was confirmed by his former wife, Zari Hassan. In a statement on her known Face book page, Zari described the deceased as a great man whose works touched many lives. Indeed Ivan touched many lives and that’s why his death took central stage on media platforms to the point that people did not even realise that professor Mukiibi also died.
Professor Mukiibi must have made immense contribution to the development of the education sector in the country but the young generation preferred to pay more attention to the death of a socialite who is known for his extravagant spending and showbiz. Even if he is buried Ugandans will spend the next two months talking about the Rich Gang President. Don’t joke with Ugandans.
