PostBank’s Wendi Wallet Trains 5,000 in Kampala, Wakiso and Mukono to Boost Financial Inclusion
PostBank Uganda’s digital mobile wallet, Wendi, has trained more than 5,000 people across Kampala, Wakiso, and Mukono districts as part of a grassroots campaign to accelerate financial inclusion in Uganda.
The initiative, which kicked off in mid-July, targets unbanked and underbanked communities in 30 markets, with a focus on equipping people with practical knowledge on how to access and use digital financial services. The campaign will run until the end of August, coinciding with the bank’s ongoing rebrand to Pearl Bank.
A highlight of Wendi is its unique savings product, which offers users an attractive 10% annual interest rate on savings starting from just UGX 20,000. Unlike traditional savings schemes, the interest is credited daily, providing customers with tangible benefits almost immediately.
“Wendi is not just another wallet; it is a game-changer in Uganda’s digital finance space,” said Brenda Mpoora, Head of Fintech Business at PostBank Uganda. “We are taking financial services right into the hearts of communities, markets, trading centers, and neighbourhoods where people live and work.”
The platform also supports group savings for SACCOs, VSLAs, and investment clubs, while providing access to digital microloans. Additionally, Wendi integrates with Western Union to facilitate international money transfers — expanding access to global remittances.
According to the FinScope Uganda 2023 survey, more than 5.3 million Ugandans remain excluded from formal banking services, underscoring the importance of digital-first financial solutions like Wendi.
“These engagements in Kampala, Wakiso, and Mukono are just the beginning, and plans are underway to expand this grassroots campaign to more districts soon,” Mpoora added.
To register, users only need a national ID and a phone number — no paperwork required. Importantly, customers do not have to be existing PostBank account holders. Wendi is accessible through both a mobile app and the USSD code *229#, ensuring inclusivity across smartphone and basic phone users.
The wallet currently operates through a network of more than 6,000 agents and supports cross-platform transfers with mobile networks like MTN and Airtel, as well as partner banks. Businesses can also leverage the platform for digital payments, including URA tax remittances, school fees, utility bills, and other essential transactions, all at affordable rates
