Electoral petitions overwhelm Jinja High court

The High Court in Jinja is overwhelmed with petitions lodged by different candidates who lost in the recent parliamentary elections from Busoga sub-region.
Among those who filed their petitions is the outgoing Kamuli district chairperson Proscovia Salaamu Musumba of the opposition Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) who dragged Hajjat Rehema Watongola of NRM to court over academic papers. Grace Kiirya Wanzala of FDC is also challenging the victory of NRM’s Nelson Lufufa for Butembe constituency in Jinja district over alleged electoral malpractices.
Karazani Charles of FDC in Buikwe North in Buikwe district has dragged Paul Musoke of NRM to court over electoral malpractices.

NRM’s inclined independent Alex Brandon Kintu also petitioned court challenging the victory of Moses Walyomu Mmuwanika as the elected Member of Parliament for Kagoma County in Jinja citing electoral irregularities.
Kubeketerya James of Bunya East in Mayuge district has petitioned court praying that it nullifies the election of NRM inclined independent James Kiwalabye Majegere over alleged ballot stuffing among other irregularities.
Independent Iddi Isabirye of Bunya South in Mayuge district has petitioned court to nullify the election of his NRM opponent Robert Ntende citing malpractices. NRM’s Eng. Dan Ibale also logged a petition against FDC’s strong man Abdu Katuntu of Bugweri County in Iganga district on grounds of faulting the electoral rules.
Independent Bagoole John Baluloba of Luuka North in Luuka district has also challenged the declaration of NRM’s Eng. Luke Kyobe Enhensiko as the elected member of parliament.
Initially, the electoral commission had declared the incumbent legislator Bagoole but Eng Inhensiko sought count recount in the magistrates’ court of Iganga which overturned Bagoole’s victory and declared Eng Kyobe. Now Bagoole has petitioned the high court to overturn the magistrates’ court ruling.
In Iganga, FDC’s diehard Abed Nasser Mudiobole has petitioned court challenging the declaration of Peter Mugema alias Panadol as the elected Member of Parliament for Iganga municipality citing malpractices.
On Monday, Deborah Mwesigwa Mugerwa whom the current speaker of Parliament Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga trounced with over 60,000 votes in the Kamuli Women MP seat has lodged a petition with an overwhelming 70 sworn affidavits citing intimidation of voters and abuse of office by the Speaker during elections.
According to the Court Registrar Suzan Kanyange, respondents were immediately served with the petitions with expectations that they will file their defense within 10 days to enable the court schedule dates for hearing the respective petitions.
