President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has been officially confirmed as the winner of Uganda’s 2026 presidential election, extending his leadership of the country following a decisive victory announced after the January 15 polls.

The National Resistance Movement (NRM) Central Executive Committee formally presented Museveni with his victory declaration at his Rwakitura country home, marking another milestone in his long political career that spans nearly four decades.

The speaker of Parliament, Anita Annet Among stated, “I have joined other leaders from the NRM party to present the certificate of victory to our Party leader and President-elect, H.E. Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, at his country home in Rwakitura. On behalf of the Parliament of Uganda, the people of Bukedea, and on my own behalf, I extend my congratulations to H.E. on his decisive victory”.

Electoral Commission Confirms Museveni Victory

According to figures released by the Electoral Commission, Museveni emerged victorious after securing the majority of valid votes cast nationwide, defeating his main challenger, National Unity Platform (NUP) leader Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, popularly known as Bobi Wine.

The election results place Museveni firmly ahead, reaffirming the NRM’s dominance across several regions of the country despite a highly competitive and closely watched race.

Museveni Thanks Supporters, Calls for Unity

Upon receiving the declaration, Museveni expressed gratitude to Ugandans for renewing his mandate, thanking party leaders, security agencies, and supporters for what he described as a peaceful electoral process.

“I want to thank God, my family, and the people of Uganda for trusting us once again,” Museveni said, as he reflected on his political journey and the responsibility of leading the nation into the next phase of development.

The president also addressed concerns about voter turnout, suggesting that many supporters may have chosen not to vote due to confidence in the NRM’s strength.

Focus on Stability, Growth, and National Development

Museveni emphasized that his new term will prioritize economic transformation, wealth creation, and national stability, reiterating his long-standing message of maintaining peace as the foundation for development.

He called on political leaders and citizens alike to move beyond the election period and focus on unity, reconciliation, and progress.

“Elections are a competition, but after that, we must work together for Uganda,” he stated.

Opposition Raises Concerns

Meanwhile, opposition leaders have raised concerns regarding the electoral process, citing alleged irregularities and restrictions during the campaign period. Bobi Wine and his party have indicated they are reviewing the results and weighing their legal and political options.

Despite the criticism, the Electoral Commission maintains that the election was conducted in accordance with the law.

Museveni’s Legacy and What Lies Ahead

Museveni’s victory further cements his status as one of Africa’s longest-serving leaders. Analysts say his next term will be closely scrutinized, particularly on issues of governance, youth employment, cost of living, and political reforms.
