Uganda has received two women said to be wives of the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) leader, Joseph Kony, and their children following their repatriation from Bangui in the Central African Republic.
The group arrived at the UPDF Airbase in Entebbe where they were received by officials of the Uganda Peoples' Defence Force (UPDF). The operation was overseen by the Chief of Defence Intelligence and Security, Major General Richard OTTO.
Among those repatriated are Ugandan Ikol Grace, 33, and her two children, along with South Sudanese national Aniyessi Teregina, 33, who was also accompanied by one of Kony’s orphaned children. Authorities confirmed that Aniyessi will be assisted to return to her home country of South Sudan in due course.
Ikol Grace was reportedly abducted in 2003 from Amuria District at the age of 10, while Aniyessi Teregina was abducted in 2006 from Yambio at age 13.
According to military information, eight women identified as wives of Kony and 13 children escaped captivity in January after their camp was attacked by an armed group south of Darfur, near the border areas of Sudan, South Sudan, and the Central African Republic. Other escapees from Congo and CAR were also reportedly reunited with their families in their respective countries.
Authorities further noted that between 2023 and 2024, more than 150 LRA returnees, including some wives and children linked to Kony, have been repatriated to Uganda from the Central African Republic after escaping captivity.
The latest repatriation forms part of ongoing regional efforts to manage the long-running impact of the LRA insurgency across multiple countries in East and Central Africa.
