Ugandan Filmmakers Shine at Zanzibar International Film Festival
Uganda’s film industry marked a major milestone at the 2025 Zanzibar International Film Festival (ZIFF), as its filmmakers, actors, and storytellers scooped some of the festival’s most prestigious awards.
The evening saw actress Doreen Mirembe take home the Best Actress in a TV Series award for Damalie. Veteran actor and filmmaker Ntare Guma Mbaho Mwine was recognised for his touching documentary, Memories of Love Returned.
Another major win came for Peter Odeke, who was crowned Best Actor in a Feature Film for his powerful performance in Janani – The Last Stand. The film, directed by celebrated Ugandan filmmaker Matt Bish, was also named Best Feature Film.
The night at ZIFF reaffirmed what many in the creative sector have long believed: Uganda is deep and valuable source of unique, powerful, and compelling stories waiting to be told.
