Man Polo Talks About Baxragga

To know and talk about Baxragga you cannot forget to talk about Genza Paul, Producer Man Polo from BCG Records.

Man Polo, based on, Makindye Salaama Road, started his career of music production in 2013 at Karma Records. He said that being a good piano player since childhood inspired and motivated him to join the production world. And he has so far worked with Source Studio, Reverb Studio and Zua Records “where he discovered Baxragga from”. Currently, he is with BCG Records.

While many people know him through the Baxragga style, Man Polo has produced many mega hit songs like: Nkwagala by B2C featuring Maro; Katono Katono by Rema; Bwerere by Barbie Jay; andm, Medicine by Aziz Azion, among others.

Man Polo believes that though many producers have produced songs in baxragga style, he is the one who laid its foundation; and made the first fusion of Bakisimba and Ragga, leading to the creation of the popular loved sound of Baxragga

Speaking to the Sunrise, Man Polo said that he created Baxragga mysteriously. He said he felt that the tune was very nice. “I was in the studio with Aziz Azion, when he had come to record a song titled, Nabigumira. During that time, I started playing my piano and mixing different sounds, that’s when I came up with Baxragga rhythm, by that time I was still working at Zua Records,” he said.

He explained that Baxragga is a mixture of Bakisimba and Ragga. Bakisimba is composed of the local and traditional musical sounds from instruments like drums, xylopholes, among others. And ragga sound is of Jamaican origin.

He said that when he was creating Baxragga, he was using Ragga sound; and when he mixed it with Bakisimbe sound, the sounds come out so good and unique that, “I loved the sound, not because it was my own creation but it was also nice, though I did not know whether other people would like it, but we decided to give it a shot and see if people would appreciate my creation,” Polo said.

Aziz also loved the soundtrack and decided to do a song with it titled, Am Bad. “When that song was out, many people loved it; and it made rounds on all media houses and social media platforms because of its unique beats which sounded traditional due to the Bakisimba sound. As a producer, I was so happy seeing my creation appreciated. And from then on I started producing more and more Baxragga songs,” Man Polo said.

“I have produced many songs in baxragga style like;Winner Azion and Omulembe by Aziz, featuring Sheebah among others. And so far all my songs have performed well musically on social media and they have also been nominated in various music awards,” he said.

Man Polo said that, there are many music producers who have tried to produce Baxragga song, but with him he does not feel bad about it. He  said he feels humbled that many people have appreciated his creation and that’s why they are also using his idea; people always copy what is good,” he added.

Now, many Ugandan musician like; Bebe Cool, Geo Steady, Navio and Dr. Hilderman, among others, have recorded song in Baxragga style and many of those songs have made mega hits because people have appreciated the traditional touch, These songs include; Kabulengane, Ngyogereza, Omwana agenda, Kano Koze, Olukoba, among others.

As the creator of Baxragga, Man Polo has made a rythym of Baxragga and musicians like, Ykee Benda a.k.a The Farmer, Beenie Gunter, Dray23, Jackie Inner and Jay Lu, have now worked with his baxragga rythym. And he believes that this project will be a great success.
