UNEB Orders Display of 2025 Candidates’ Registers to Ensure Accuracy Before Exams

The Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) has directed all schools and examination centres across the country to publicly display the 2025 candidates’ registers until October 10, 2025, to allow for verification of students’ details ahead of the national examinations.

In a press statement issued on August 18, UNEB Executive Director Dan Odongo emphasised that the mandatory display of candidates’ registers began on August 10 and will run for two months. The directive is intended to enable candidates, parents, and schools to identify and correct any errors in registration before the examination season begins.

According to UNEB, the registers must be placed in conspicuous locations within schools and district headquarters where candidates were registered. Parents of learners in schools that do not have UNEB centre status have also been urged to check and confirm their children’s registration details at designated centres.

“This exercise is very important to avoid unfortunate scenarios where students are discovered unregistered at the start of the examination period,” the statement read. UNEB stressed that students who have proof of payment of registration fees but are not listed must immediately notify their schools, and if no action is taken, the matter should be reported directly to UNEB for remedial measures.

Verification of Candidate Details

The examination body instructed parents, candidates, and Heads of Centres to carefully scrutinize the accuracy of details on the registers. These include:

  • Index/Personal Number
  • Correct spelling and order of names
  • Date of Birth (in UNEB’s official order: Day, Month, Year)
  • Gender
  • Subjects registered (for UCE and UACE candidates)
  • The correct passport-sized photograph of the rightful candidate

In line with the Data Privacy and Protection Act, UNEB directed that only relevant bio-data should be displayed to protect candidates’ personal information.

SMS Verification Service

To further ease the process, UNEB has introduced an SMS option where candidates and parents can verify registration status using mobile phones. By typing Reg. [space] Full Index Number and sending it to 6600, users will receive confirmation of a candidate’s registration status. This initiative is expected to provide quick access to information, especially for parents who may not easily access examination centres.

Correction of Errors

Where errors or discrepancies are identified in a candidate’s biodata or photograph, schools and centres are required to formally communicate with UNEB within the stipulated period. For Primary Leaving Examinations (PLE), adjustments must be made through amendment forms available on the UNEB portal. For Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) and Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE), schools are expected to submit an amendment request letter accompanied by either a National Identity Card or a Birth Certificate for verification of the candidate’s details.

Guidance and Helplines

For inquiries and guidance, UNEB has provided multiple contact lines, including 041-777-3100, 0312-206-300, the toll-free line 0800-111-427, and customer care numbers 0760-131-261, 0776-865-556, and 0776-993-335.

Call for Vigilance

Odongo commended candidates, parents, teachers, and inspectors of schools for their cooperation in the registration exercise but urged continued vigilance to ensure that all details are correct.

“Let us now use the registers to ensure that the data submitted is accurate,” he stated, adding that all stakeholders must take the verification exercise seriously to prevent last-minute complications.

The exercise is expected to bring more transparency and accountability into the national examination process, safeguarding both students and schools from errors that could jeopardise candidates’ futures.

With examinations being a pivotal stage in learners’ academic journeys, UNEB’s insistence on accuracy reflects the Board’s commitment to maintaining integrity and credibility in Uganda’s education system.
