Uganda Cranes through to last 16

Uganda Cranes have qualified to play in the last 16 of the African Cup of Nations despite losing 2-0 to hosts Egypt.

Both of Egypt’s goals came in the first half. The first one coming from their star striker and Liverpool forward Muhammad Salah in the 36th minute while the second came from their captain Ahmed Elmohamady

The result however doesn’t reflect the state of play as Uganda put up a wonderful display of attacking talent that failed to yield goals.

The Cranes had 17 shorts on goal with 6 of them on target against only 4 for Egypt. Uganda Cranes lack of a clinical finisher accounted for the many missed opportunities.

Farouk Miya and Emmanuel Okwi, missed several goal opportunities while forward Lumala Abdu was twice denied by Egypt goalkeeper El-Shenawy in two successive attempts.

Despite the loss, Uganda advances to the last 16 for the first time since 1978. This was also thanks to a result between DR Congo and Zimbabwe where the Congolese thumped Zimbabwe 4-0. D.R Congo are hopping to be among the four teams that will be selected to make 20 teams that will play in the next round.
