Uganda Cubs booked their place at the TotalEnergies CAF U-17 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2026 after securing a 3-0 victory over hosts Ethiopia.
Earlier in the day, Tanzania had become the first nation to seal qualification by defeating Kenya 3-1 in the opening semi-final at the Abebe Bikila Stadium, making Uganda the second team to join them at the continental tournament.
The encounter between Uganda and Ethiopia began cautiously, with both sides closing down spaces and limiting clear chances. Ethiopia briefly celebrated what they believed was the opener shortly after halftime, only for the effort to be ruled out for offside.
Uganda broke the deadlock in the 50th minute when Lorian Lwesibawa’s corner was diverted into the goal by Ethiopian goalkeeper Temesgen Kebede Tadesse, giving the 2024 champions a 1-0 advantage. Only two minutes later, a mistake from defender Efison Kidane Kindo gifted captain Owen Mukisa an opportunity, and he fired home to extend the lead to 2-0.
Despite Ethiopia’s attempts to regroup and push forward, Uganda controlled proceedings in midfield and defence. In the 78th minute, Lwesibawa struck again from a free-kick, which the Ethiopian goalkeeper failed to stop, sealing a 3-0 scoreline.
As frustration grew among the hosts, Uganda coach Kingston Laryea introduced several substitutions to maintain momentum. Reflecting on the win, Laryea praised his players, saying, “The boys worked hard and now we turn focus to the final against Tanzania on Tuesday,” added Laryea.
Tuesday’s action will begin with the play-off between Kenya and Ethiopia to decide the third team to qualify for next year’s AFCON U-17, followed by the final between Tanzania and Uganda.
