The Minister of Works and Transport, Hon. Fred Byamukama, has inspected the digital number plate production facility at Kyambogo following concerns raised by stakeholders over the shortage of number plates.
According to the Ministry of Works and Transport, the shortage has disrupted service delivery and frustrated business owners and motorists seeking vehicle registration services.
During the inspection, the Minister directed the contractor, Joint Stock Company Global Security (JSCGS), to resolve all outstanding production capacity challenges by the end of August this year.
The Ministry said the directive is intended to restore a steady and reliable supply of digital number plates, particularly for clients seeking first-time vehicle registration.
The inspection comes days after a meeting between the Ministry, stakeholders and the contractor to discuss the production challenges and agree on corrective measures aimed at improving output and service delivery.
The latest development follows a public notice issued by the Ministry dismissing claims circulating on social media that the registration and issuance of digital number plates had been suspended.
In the notice, the Ministry described the claims as false and misleading, maintaining that the digital number plate programme remains in effect and that registration services continue in accordance with established procedures.
The Ministry urged members of the public to rely on official communication and cautioned against creating or sharing unverified information that could cause unnecessary confusion and inconvenience.
While the Ministry maintains that the digital number plate programme has not been suspended, it has acknowledged production capacity challenges that it expects the contractor to address by the end of August to improve the supply of number plates.
