Collapsed Kabale-Katuna road cuts off Rwanda, Burundi

Another ignored effect of Climate Change

Shocking, the road cracked as if by an earthquake. It is becoming clear that heavy rain is contributing to the loosening of the ground hence the collapse

Trade and Travel between Uganda and her neighbours Rwanda and Burundi has came to a temporary halt over the weekend when a section of the Kabale-Katuna road, the major gateway from Mombasa and Kigali and Bujumbura.

Uganda National Roads Authority officials rushed to the location of the collapse, some three kilometres to try to understand the cause of the fissures.

UNRA Executive Director Allen Kagina tweeted that the collapse was likely a result of landslides. Indeed some pictures, showed soil had moved on the sides of the road.

Repairs underwayon Kabale Katuna road in order to resume service

UNRA has been working day and night to restore service. But the closure has greatly hindered movement and trade as truckers were told to use the recently completed Ntungamo-Mirama Hills road.

The collapse of the section of the road highlights the impact that heavy rains and climate change in general has had on the country’s infrastructure.

The ongoing rains which started in February, have greatly damaged the country’s relatively new infrastructure.

Sadly, however, very few people associate heavy rains to climate change, even though a number of climate models for Eastern Africa, indicate increased levels of rainfall.

Heavy rains have also swept away a number of bridges in Eastern Uganda including the Palisa-Tirinyi road.
