Museveni’s Air Uganda flight triggers speculation

Disembarking; President Museveni rode like a common passenger to Ethiopia aboard Air Uganda

As he prepared to meet fellow presidents in Addis Ababa this week, Tolosa Shogi, Uganda’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Sam Kutesa and Uganda’s Ambassador to Ethiopia Mull Katende and AU officials.

But Museveni’s trip has sparked wild speculation on the social media as to the reasons for his choice to leave behind his luxurious and more secure plane.

Some commentators have speculated that Uganda’s tight financial situation could have played in the calculations considering that flying a private plane is a costly venture. Others, on the other hand have posited that the Presidential plane might have developed mechanical fault.

African leaders discussed a number of things along the theme “2014 Year of Agriculture and Food Security, Marking 10th Anniversary of the Adoption of the Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme (CAADP).”

But security was high on the Agenda regarding the security situations in Central African Republic, South Sudan and DR. Congo.

Museveni used to the meeting to meet with his counterpart Omah El-Bashir, suspected to have been about the war in South Sudan. Uganda’s forces remain in South Sudan, even though Sudan and Ethiopia have asked Uganda to withdraw its troops.

The meeting also came a day after South Sudan’s government released 10 political prisoners loyal to rebel leader Riek Machar.
