Tumukunde to face Court Martial for ‘treason’

UPDATED: 2021 Presidential contender Lieutenant General Henry Tumukunde, who was arrested yesterday at his office in Kololo is to formally be charged with treason before the General Court Martial today Friday March 13, Police Spokesperson Fred Enanga has said on Twitter.

According to one of his aides identified as Muwonge, Tumukunde was told he was being arrested over treason in the presence of his lawyers yesterday during a joint operation that was carried out by the CID Police and the Special Forces Command (SFC).
Tumukunde recently declared his intention to unseat President Museveni in the coming 2021 general elections and has attracted a lot of media attention and public debate. This largely stems from his rank as a General but also from his past assignments as a spy chief when he headed of the Internal Security Organization (ISO) and also as Minister of Security before he was sacked in March 2018.
Preliminary reports indicate that he was driven to Kibuli before he was taken to Makindye military baracks where he spent the night.
Government spokesperson Ofwono Opondo said: “Tumukunde has been calling upon foreign countries to cause change in this country, bragging about his 1000 tactics among others and I believe they could be one of the causes of his arrest”.
Some analysts say that Tumukunde’s ‘careless’ comments that bordered in leaking of state secrets were bound to cause him trouble.
Presidential advisor on Media John Naggenda actually noted recently that he doubted Tumukunde was serious on winning the presidency but rather to annoy President Museveni.
