Court of Appeal Hears Final Arguments in Mowzey Radio Murder Case, Ruling Pending

The Court of Appeal has finally commenced the substantive hearing of the appeal filed by Troy Wamala, the man convicted of the manslaughter of renowned Ugandan musician Moses Ssekibogo, popularly known as Mowzey Radio. Wamala was initially sentenced to 13 years in prison following a violent altercation at De Bar in Entebbe on January 22, 2018, which resulted in the artist’s death.

Wamala’s legal team subsequently filed an appeal, seeking a review of the sentence. However, the appeal process has been marked by significant delays, with repeated postponements attributed to the defense citing unavailability and a lack of preparedness.

During the court proceedings, Mowzey Radio’s brother, who attended the hearing, expressed deep frustration over the protracted delays. Speaking to Sanyuka TV, he accused Wamala’s team of employing delaying tactics to prolong the case. “They have continuously used excuses to stall the hearings,” he stated, reflecting the family’s growing impatience for closure.

The Court of Appeal has now concluded the hearing, indicating that a ruling will be delivered “on notice,” meaning the decision will be announced at a later, unspecified date. This decision leaves the family in a state of anticipation, awaiting the outcome of the appeal.

The family of the late Mowzey Radio has consistently voiced their dissatisfaction with the original 13-year sentence, deeming it too lenient. They argue that the sentence does not adequately reflect the profound loss they have suffered. “Radio was the breadwinner and caretaker for our mother, had a family and children, and many responsibilities,” a family member stated. “We felt the sentence was too lenient, especially since the time he spent on remand was deducted from it. But we had no choice.”

The family’s sentiments underscore the emotional toll the prolonged legal battle has taken, as they seek justice for the loss of a beloved artist and family member. The impending ruling from the Court of Appeal is now eagerly awaited, with the hope of bringing a definitive conclusion to this long-drawn-out legal saga.
