One Dead, Four Injured in Gateway Bus Crash Along Katosi–Nyenga Road

One person has been confirmed dead and four others injured following a tragic road crash involving a Gateway Bus in the early hours of Monday morning. The incident took place around 1:30 AM at Katovu in Ngongwe along the Katosi–Nyenga Road in Buikwe District.

According to Uganda Police Traffic and Road Safety spokesperson ASP Michael Kananura, the accident involved a Scania bus with registration number UA 354AN, which was travelling from Kampala to Soroti via the Katosi route.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the front tyre of the bus burst, causing the driver to lose control. The vehicle overturned on the right side, killing the driver instantly and leaving four passengers injured.

“The driver died instantly, while four passengers sustained injuries of varying degrees,” said ASP Kananura in a statement. “Our team responded promptly, and the injured were transported to Nkonkonjeru Health Centre and Kawolo Hospital for medical attention.”

The body of the deceased was taken to Kawolo Hospital Mortuary for a postmortem examination, and the bus was towed to Ngongwe Police Station as investigations continue.

ASP Kananura emphasized the importance of preventative maintenance, particularly tyre inspections, among motorists and public service vehicle operators. “Motorists must conduct regular vehicle maintenance, especially tyre inspections, and strictly adhere to road safety regulations. A simple oversight can have fatal consequences,” he warned.

The Gateway Bus crash once again puts the spotlight on the risks associated with night travel and mechanical negligence in the public transport sector. With an average of 13 road crash fatalities per day, authorities are urging stricter enforcement and greater awareness to reverse the troubling trend.
