LED Advertising Boards and VAR System Arrive at Namboole Ahead of CHAN 2024
Preparations for the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) have entered a new phase at Mandela National Stadium in Namboole, with the delivery and pending installation of cutting-edge LED digital advertising boards and the much-anticipated Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system.
According to sources at the stadium, approximately 200 LED perimeter boards have been procured for the event. The equipment, manufactured by Absen—one of the world’s leading brands in LED display technology—was supplied through SAIL, a company contracted by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to deliver high-standard advertising solutions for the tournament.
The boards are set to be installed along three sides of the pitch and will offer dynamic digital advertising space throughout the CHAN 2024 matches. Stadium officials have confirmed that the LED boards will remain the property of Mandela National Stadium and will be utilized for future sports and entertainment events well beyond the tournament.
“This is a major boost not only for CHAN 2024 but for the long-term modernization of the stadium,” said a source close to the installation team.
In a related development, installation of the VAR system has also commenced today. This marks a significant technological upgrade to the stadium, aligning it with international football standards and enhancing match officiating for the upcoming tournament.
The dual installation efforts—LED boards and VAR—are part of broader renovations aimed at ensuring Namboole meets CAF and FIFA standards, as Uganda prepares to co-host CHAN 2024 under the “AFCON PAMOJA” arrangement alongside Tanzania and Kenya.
More updates are expected in the coming days as work intensifies to complete the upgrades ahead of CAF inspections.
