Why Police Blocked NUP Fundraising in Mubende
Police in Mubende District on Friday morning blocked a National Unity Platform (NUP) fundraising event that was scheduled to take place at the party’s offices in Kirungi Ward, Mubende Municipality, citing failure to secure clearance from the Inspector General of Police (IGP).
The event, aimed at raising funds to support NUP President Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu ahead of the 2026 general elections, was disrupted by security forces as early as 7:00 a.m., according to local party leaders.
“We had organized our fundraising meeting at our offices here in Kirungi, which we believe is not against the law,” said Pafuladito Kyeyune, the NUP Chairperson for Mubende District.
“We had a meeting with the RDC, and they directed us to write to the Inspector General of Police—something we find to be a complicated process.”
Kyeyune added that senior party officials from the NUP Secretariat, including Balimwezo, Zaake, Kabuye, and Hon. Kivumbi, the Vice President for Buganda Region, were en route to attend the event when it was blocked.
Harunah Kabali, the NUP Registrar for Mubende Municipality, called for calm and determination.
“I want to call upon all NUP members in Mubende to remain focused. One day we shall overcome all this. We are going to reschedule another day for the fundraising,” he said.
Aspiring MPs and party supporters voiced frustration over the police’s actions.
“It is very sad to see men in uniform blocking the young generation from conducting a peaceful fundraising event—especially one held at our own party offices,” said Ismael Ssegawa, known as Sureman, an aspiring MP for Mubende Municipality.
“But all in all, we shall overcome this oppression.”
Another aspiring MP, Bob Richard Kyamanywa, emphasized the party’s commitment to the 2026 race.
“As NUP members in Mubende, we are very committed to supporting our president, Kyagulanyi. We all know that we must paint Mubende red come 2026. Blocking us from holding today’s event will not intimidate us.”
The police have not issued a public statement as of publishing time.
