Gen. Muntu ends impasse between FDC, Speaker Kadaga

The dispute between the Speaker of Parliament Rebecca Kadaga and the Forum For Democratic Change (FDC) over the title of the Leader of Opposition has been settled.
This is after Gen. Mugisha Muntu, which is also the leading Opposition Party in Parliament, wrote to the Speaker Rebecca Kadaga accepting to go with the title of Leader of Opposition for their representative.
According to the Parliament’s Public Relations Officer Chris Obore Gen. Muntu officially to the Office of the Speaker withdrawing the new titles FDC had forwarded to replace the traditional titles of the Leader of Opposition and the Opposition Chief whip in the House.
“FDC have finally given in to the Speaker. Their Party president has officially written to her accepting the official titles traditionally used in the Parliament of Uganda,” Obore said.
FDC’s Secretary General Nandala Mafabi had previously written to the office of the Speaker to the effect that Kasese District Woman Member of Parliament(MP) Winnie Kiiza whom the Party had elected for the position of Leader of Opposition to be changed to Minority Leader and while the Kira Municipality MP Ssemuju Nganda to Party Whip instead of Opposition Chief Whip.
While FDC leaders might have wanted to use what critics have called sheer semantics to save their face for participating in a government whose legitimacy they question, the Speaker rejected it on grounds that giving in to the new titles would tantamount to violation of both the Constitution and Parliament’s rules of procedure.
