
The Judicial Training Institute (JTI) has commenced a two-day training program for Justices of the Court of Appeal on the management of election petition appeals.
The training, being held at the Court of Appeal Conference Hall in Kampala, is intended to strengthen the Court's preparedness to effectively handle election petition appeals.
According to the Judiciary, participants include Justices of the Court of Appeal, Registrars attached to the Court of Appeal, and Magistrates (Research) attached to the Justices of the Court.
As part of the program, participants are being taken through the electoral cycle and the use of technology in election petitions by Dr. Jennifer Angeyo, Head of Legal at the Electoral Commission, and Mr. Ahmed Abdallah Ochama, Head of Department for Voter Data Management.
The training will also feature sessions on the jurisprudence surrounding election petition appeals. These presentations will be delivered by Lady Justice Prof. Lillian Tibatemwa-Ekirikubinza of the Supreme Court and Dr. Benson Tusasirwe of the School of Law at Makerere University.
In addition, Counsel Ebert Byenkya will lead discussions on procedural concerns in election petition appeals.
A panel discussion titled, "Mirroring the Court of Appeal: Perspectives of the Attorney General, the Bar, and Academia in Shaping Electoral Justice," is also scheduled as part of the training.
The panel will comprise the Attorney General, Mr. John Mary Mugisha (Senior Counsel), Mr. Eric Sabiiti of the Electoral Commission, Dr. Benson Tusasirwe of Makerere University School of Law, and Mr. George Umunyokol, an Advocate and Chairperson of the CLE Committee, Law Council, as well as a JTI Council Member.
The two-day training is being moderated by HW Lillian Bucyana, the Acting Registrar of the Judicial Training Institute.
